Cowra's Mulyan Wines has continued to impress, winning two trophies at the recent Cowra Wine Show. The Mulyan Cowra Viognier 2007 was awarded The Manildra Group Trophy for the Best Viognier of the Show as well as the Tony Gray Award for the Best Local White Wine of the Show.
These trophies have come on the back of other recent awards including Top of Class for the Mulyan Cowra Shiraz Viognier 2006 at the 2009 Boutique Wine Awards chaired by Huon Hooke, a Blue Gold award at the 2009 Sydney International Wine Competition and the Cowra Bottle Shop Award for the Best White Wine of the Show at the Cowra Regional Wine Awards for the Mulyan Cowra Viognier 2007
'We are extremely excited about these trophies,' commented Mulyan owner Jenni Fagan. 'To get consistent results such as these is an encouraging reward for the work that has gone into both the viniculture and the winemaking. It is a reflection of the quality of the wine that Cowra has produced of the past few years.'
The Cowra Wine Show, which was established in 1983, is a well respected, national wine show. The 2009 judging panel included Chief Judge Andrew Spinaze, Lester Jesberg, Tim Knappstein and Steve Goodwin, David Morris and Russell Cody.
Mulyan Wines won a total of eight medals as well as the two trophies at the Cowra Wine Show.

Cowra's Mulyan Wines (mul-lee-an) has been awarded dual blue-gold medals for two of its wines at the 2008 Sydney International Wine Competition.
Mulyan's current release Chardonnays, the 2006 Mulyan 'Block 7' Cowra Chardonnay and the 2006 Mulyan Cowra Chardonnay, were both awarded blue-gold medals, with the Mulyan Block 7, also receiving a position in the Competition's Top 100 wines.
In addition, the Mulyan Cowra Viognier 2006 was awarded a Highly Commended at this prestigious competition.
Whilst Cowra is gaining a reputation for its red wines, it continues to prove that it is a world class producer of Chardonnay.
All of these wines were judged with food, by a team of internationally acclaimed wine judges, including Chief Judge Kym Milne MW and Neil Hadley MW from Australia, Doug Frost MS MW from the USA and Cathy van Zyl MW from South Africa. "The Competition is unique for this reason," commented Mulyan owner and Vigneron Peter Fagan. "We strongly support this particular show, as much of the wine consumed in Australia is with food. The results from this show become a great tool for restaurants, cafés and consumers who are looking for new wines that have proven their compatibility with food."
2007 has been a particularly successful year for Mulyan wines with their 2005 Mulyan 'Block 9' Cowra Shiraz Viognier also receiving high praise. The wine was the winner of the top Gold Medal (class 79) at the 2007 Cowra Wine Show as well as one of the Top 40 in the NSW Wine Awards.
"We have paid particular attention to quality in our 55 hectare vineyard over the past few years, and the results are starting to flow through," explained Peter.
The final results of the 2008 Competition, along with the trophy winners, will be announced on the 1st March 2008 at the Awards Presentation Banquet. Further information is available at www.top100wines.com.au.
The 25th Cowra Wine Show has recently announced its results with two local wineries enjoying considerable success.
Windowrie's 2006 'The Mill' Chardonnay received "The Tony Gray Trophy" from the Cowra Regional Vineyard Association (CRVA) for the "Best Local Wine of the Show", as well as a Gold medal in class 38.
Neighbouring winery, Mulyan (mul-lee-an) Wines, was awarded the top Gold Medal (Class 79) for their 2005 Mulyan Shiraz Viognier. "Given that the Cowra show is an open show, it attracts quality wines from across Australia", commented Windowrie owner and vineyard manager Mr. Jason O'Dea. "This allows the local winemakers to benchmark our wines against some of the best in the country - and with Chief Judge Andrew Spinaze from Tyrrells overseeing; the quality of judging is certainly comparable to the national shows." "This Trophy for best local wine of the show, and a gold medal, is a great launch for this recently released Chardonnay", commented Jason.
The 2006 The Mill Chardonnay was made from the Chardonnay grown on the 'Windowrie homeblock' which suffered hail damage in October 2005. This damage resulted in a crop loss of approximately 30-40%. However the remaining fruit achieved the great ripeness for which Cowra is renowned. A touch of Sauvignon Blanc also helped the final blend, adding a further touch of freshness.
Also from Cowra, Mulyan Wines planted their 50 hectare vineyard in the late 90s. This Shiraz Viognier is the first release of the blend. "We're extremely happy with this first Shiraz Viognier blend", commented Mulyan owner Jenni Fagan. "The property has been in the family for five generations, so the move to winemaking was a bit of a risk. This gold medal, as well as a silver and two bronzes, at the Cowra wine show has certainly given us confidence in the future of the vines and of the Cowra Region."
Mulyan winemaker, Drew Tuckwell worked closely with viticulturalist and family member, James Fagan to ensure that the fruit was picked at optimum ripeness. Half of the Shiraz was co-fermented with the Viognier (4%) before the entire blend was brought together. The wine was then matured for 20 months in new (40% of the blend) and 1 year old (60%) French hogsheads. "We're certainly excited about the future of Cowra," said Jenni, "not only has the region made a name for its' Chardonnay, we're starting to see the potential of some other varieties, particularly reds. As the vines mature, the wines can only improve. As well, we're utilising some of the experience being gained by our winemaking daughter Sarah who is currently working with De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley."
