MULYAN BLOCK 9 COWRA SHIRAZ VIOGNIER 2005

A really enjoyable drinking experience ensued from this red blend from this boutique winery from the Cowra area of Central Western NSW. Complexity abounds from the aromas emanating from gaminess, dark sour cherries, forest floor and blueberries. Hints of mushroom and red earth as well. Seamless in mouthfeel, balance and integration, the Viognier is indiscernible but present. Fine tannins, melded oak all augur for a glorious long lingering finish of lifted red and black fruits. Drink to 2010. About $25. 91/100 – Excellent. Paul Ippolito, www.paulippolito.com.au, March 2008

"Opens up beautifully in the glass to reveal a husky, spicy, cherried wine of medium weight but high savoury impact. Attractive savoury-sweet tannin structure, lively acidity, peppery aromatics - and peppery flavours too. Excellent wine. Drink: 2008-2015. 91 points."

"Top effort. Cowra (NSW) region fruit, viognier lift jumps out early but settles, revealing meat, florals, spice, liquorice and dark cherry fruit aroma's. Medium to full weight, red and sour cherry flavours with quite an intense spiciness, lovely balance and impressive length. Central NSW is turning out better wines every year."

"Smells of dark, bitter chocolate and tastes like spicy plum pudding."

"Neighbouring Mulyan Wines won a gold medal for its 2005 Mulyan Shiraz Viognier, its first release of the popular blend. Although some of the region's wineries have done it tough in recent years, owner Jenni Fagan is excited about Cowra's future. "Not only has the region made a name for its Chardonnay, we're starting to see the potential of some other varieties, particularly reds," she said."

MULYAN 'BLOCK 7' COWRA CHARDONNAY 2006

"This is a classy chardonnay with subtle layers of malt and nougat overlying lemony fruit and crisp acidity. It's subtle, restrained and elegant, with all the components in fine balance, finishing with line and length. A surprising wine" Huon Hooke, Gourmet Wine Magazine, June 2008

"The 2006 vintage whites impressed me as having jumped into high gear. The 2006 Block 7 Chardonnay (92/100) is a very classy wine, with subtle barrel-ferment aromas, hints of malt and nougat, lemony and vibrant in the mouth - a wine of real line and length." Huon Hooke, The Age & The Sydney Morning Herald, May 2008

Cowra’s reputation was built on chardonnay. A young Brian Croser sourced his first Petaluma from here in 1977, and in the 1980s Cowra’s ability to efficiently produce big volumes of rich, peachy chardonnay saved Rothbury Estate’s bacon. Now, as Jenni and Peter Fagan show with these terrific Mulyan wines, there’s a seriously good side to Cowra chardonnay – more akin to the 1997 Petaluma than the mass produced Rothbury wines of the ‘80s and ‘90s. These are generous and peachy wines, but young and fresh with the complexities of barrel fermentation and maturation. The oak fermented viognier’s on the mark too.
Chris Shanahan, Sunday Canberra Times, July 2008

TOP TIPPLE - "A typical Cowra chardonnay in its generosity and ripeness. Great intensity and complexity already and more on the way it it's true to its rich, oaky style. There's a great bouquet of citrus blossom, ripe peaches and roasted cashews, plus impressive flavour, balance and texture that make this such a winner as a food wine. Make sure your next chardonnay is from Cowra and relive that old chardy excitement."
Rob Ingram, Country Style Magazine, March 2008

"For decades Cowra was known as the place where Japanese POWs were housed during the war years. Now it has a new claim to fame as a burgeoning wine region. This is one of the better ones, a richly textured chardy with layers of citrus and stonefruit, balanced French oak characters and a creamy finish. Drink with roast pork."
Kerry Skinner, Illawarra Mercury, March 2008

"... The Mulyan Block 7 Chardonnay is slightly golden in colour, the noses shows distinct peach and melon flavours with a whiff of French oak sitting nicely in the background. The oak adds a slightly creamy texture to the wine together with more complex characters and it doesn't overpower the fruit. The fruit is nicely balanced with no particular flavour dominating; nectarine and melon with some vanilla flavours also present. The wine has finesse and a character all its own."
Jim McMahon, Education, March

"Nice gear, this stuff from Mulyan. It's always interesting to see new producers popping up from unheralded regions with their own interpretation on quality wine. Generally, they have to be creative and to offer great value for money in order to be noticed. Mulyan fits the bill in this respect.

Lovely balance in this wine, with great interplay between winemaker influence and restrained pear and stone fruit flavours. There's some toasty, spicy oak flavour on show but it's classy and adds to the overall impression, rather than detracting. This is a stylish wine that delivers the goods at around 20 bucks."

Cowra has long been a Chardonnay stronghold and this is right up there with its finest current releases. Rich and toasty with understated oak.
John Fordham, The Wine List. Sunday Telegraphy 3 Feb 2008

"Smells and tastes of oatmeal, citrus and grapefruit, its lingering finish impressive to say the least. This is a closed, delicate, cards-close-to-its chest wine of style and quality. It needs another year in bottle. It's very good." Drink: 2009-2013. 94 points.

MULYAN COWRA CHARDONNAY 2006

"Mulyan hails from Cowra in New South Wales, which is a region that seems to suit Chardonnay nicely on the evidence of this wine. Plenty of pear and stone-fruit flavour and lovely balance too. It ticks all the boxes"
Grant Dodd, The Wining Pro, May 2008

"Oh boy - if you like chardonnay, get on board. This is enormous value. It's an exquisite wine, stoney, minerally, well-tempered and elegant. Ripe, grapefruity, nectarine-like fruit runs through its centre and it's terrifically well weighted. I'm blown away; it's a marvellous wine.

"I had to open up a new account for Cowra before writing this one up..which is quite surprising because I often mistake bottle aged Cowra Chardonnay for the wines of renowned Chablis producer Raveneau.

I also tasted the 2006 Block 7 Cowra Chardonnay ($25) at the same time which has a little more power, length and intensity but a similar flavour profile. 90 points.

Attractive and fairly subdued with wafts of creamy cashew and spicy French vanilla oak over stonefruit, pear and citrus with a bit of funkiness adding interest. It's not oaky as such but it certainly plays a large part in the aromatic profile most likely due to the subtle nature of the fruit. On the palate again quite delicate with some mineral, lemon and stonefruit backed with spicy vanilla oak and slightly earthy flavours."

". it is pretty fresh and enjoyable to drink. Finishes with bright citrussy acidity and a bit of spice. A good style to complement rather than overwhelm food. "

MULYAN COWRA VIOGNIER 2006

"The '06 Viognier (90/100) is also very good, again with subtle barrel influences and a degree of complexity, although the alcohol isn't shy at 14.2%."
Huon Hooke, The Age & Sydney Morning Herald, May 2008

"There's a powerful fruit intensity about this wine that may be at odds with developing fashion in Viognier. Pineapple skin, musk, peach and apricot kernel aroma's, followed by a concentrated, sweet fruit attack on entry. After the initial impression though the wine goes in another direction, with plenty of tangy spice and a dry, lightly phenolic finish that doesn't cloy in the slightest. Flavour, it doesn't lack, but a bit more restraint would certainly make this a more complete wine. That said, I would expect this to sell like hot cakes. It's well made and well priced in a market where Viognier is undergoing faddish support, and it slips down rather too easily to end up
